Welcome to Viroqua, Wisconsin, your Doorway to the Driftless Area, a region of unglaciated, mountainous terrain known as the Ocooch Mountains and breath-catching deep-carved valleys, or coulees, drained by hundreds of cold-spring streams. Visitors are discovering the many attractions of this scenic corner of the Upper Midwest…trout fishing our Class A blue
ribbon streams, cycling our back country roads, sampling the fruits of local vineyards and orchards… hiking, hunting or just hanging out on Main Street for a visit that will help you discover what you’ve been looking for all along. We’ll even tell you the real meaning of “Driftless”!
Driftless Area- dramatic hills located in southwestern Wisconsin and parts
of Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota that were untouched by the receding glaciers
15,000 years ago.
Ocooch- name given to the Kickapoo valley hills, stretching from Spring
Green to Viroqua, that were once home to a small band of Indians called
the Ocoche. To the Native Americans, Ocooch literally meant “waters with
many fish”.
